- Tofino and Ucluelet are approx 30min apart, they are located on the same coastline but on opposite peninsulas. The Pacific Rim National Park separates the 2 locations. The majority of the long sandy beaches are with in the park, Wick beach is approx an 8 minute drive from Ucluelet is a prime surf beach!
BC Ferries to the City of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island
To reach Tofino and Ucluelet by car from the British Columbia mainland, you'll first need to take the ferry from Vancouver to Nanaimo the departing terminals you would use to depart from Vancouver and arrive in Nanaimo will be Horseshoe Bay, or Tsawwassen, to Nanaimo.
North of Vancouver: BC Ferries Horseshoe Bay Terminal
The Horseshoe Bay Ferry is located north of Vancouver and the crossing takes one hour and thirty-five minutes. The Horseshoe Bay ferry arrives at the Departure Bay terminal in Nanaimo.
South of Vancouver: BC Ferries Tsawwassen Terminal
The Tsawwassen Ferry, south of the city and closer to the USA border, takes just a little over two hours. The Tsawwassen ferry arrives at the Duke Point terminal just about twenty minutes south of Nanaimo city centre.
Nanaimo to Tofino & Ucluelet
Travelling time to Tofino and Ucluelet from the Nanaimo ferry terminals is approximately three hours.
|1)||Take highway 19 and (travelling north) for 43 km (26 miles)|
|2)||Take Exit 60 onto Highway 4 also known as the Pacific Rim Highway (travelling west) for 156 km (97 miles). Here you will travel through Cathedral Grove which hosts spectacular ancient old growth giant cedars!|
|3)||At Port Alberni continue going straight down the hill, and turn right at the T-junction. Once you make the right turn at the T-Junction the directions are simply follow Pacific Rim Highway through its twists and turns to Tofino Ucluelet enjoying the scenic drive past beautiful Sproat Lake.|
|4)||Continuing on the highway leads you through the mountains of Sutton Pass which reach an elevation of 250m (850 feet), then the road follows along rivers and over creeks. Keep your eyes open and you may be lucky enough to see a bear or two!|
|5)||The road travels on past Kennedy Lake, the biggest lake on Vancouver Island and you'll have a lovely high scenic lookout over the lake at one point on the road - enjoy the view!|
|6)||Continue westward until you come to the T-junction between Tofino and Ucluelet. The Pacific Rim Visitors' Centre is located at the junction and is a good place to pick up maps and information about the west coast.|
|7)||For Tofino - Turn right at the junction and drive north towards Tofino for 28 km (17 miles).|
|8)||For Ucluelet - Turn left at the junction and drive for approximately seven minutes.|

Comox Valley Airport to Tofino & Ucluelet
|1)||Turn right at the airport entrance onto Knight Road.|
|2)||Turn right at the intersection onto Military Row (drive approximately 2 kms).|
|3)||At the next stop sign, turn left onto Ryan Road.|
|4)||Continue on Ryan Road (past Home Depot and down the hill), watching for signs indicating Nanaimo.|
|5)||Turn left just past the Superstore complex following the road to the 17th Street bridge, then turn right.|
|6)||While on the bridge, get into the left hand turning lanes.|
|7)||Turn left onto Cliffe Avenue, and continue to follow the signs to turn right onto the 29th Street connector.|
|8)||Continue on the connector until you see signs to Highway 19 southbound toward Nanaimo.|
|9)||Once on Highway 19 South, watch for signs pointing you to Highway 4 West toward Port Alberni/Pacific Rim National Park Reserve/Tofino, and exit in this direction.|
|10)||Once on Highway 4, you will drive through spectacular Cathedral Grove, historic Port Alberni (drive straight downhill and turn right at the junction), and around Sproat and Kennedy Lakes. You will also drive through scenic Sutton Pass, at an altitude of 250m (850 feet) - where we especially recommend heeding to the speed limit. Travel westward until you come to the junction between Tofino and Ucluelet.|
|11)||Tofino - Turn right at the Tofino/Ucluelet junction and drive north towards Tofino for 28 km (17 miles). Do not turn at the sign for the Wickaninnish Centre or Wick Road, but continue right through the Pacific Rim National Park Reserve toward Tofino.|
|12)||Ucluelet - Turn left at the Tofino/Ucluelet junction follow for approximately seven minutes to Ucluelet.|
